The Windows operating system class and filter drivers for peripheral storage devices act as an interface between any layered intermediate or higher layer controller above the filter class or controller and a port controller provided by the system.

I / O requests from a user application or a component of the kernel reach storage class controllers through I / O System Services and one or more intermediate or higher level controllers, such as a file system controller. Storage class controllers translate the standard IRPs they get into IRPs with system-defined SCSI request blocks (SRBs) that contain SCSI command descriptor blocks (CDBs) before sending each IRP to the next lower controller. A storage port controller translates the SRBs of the class controllers into the bus-specific commands that the storage HBA sends, through an I / O bus controller and possibly one or more filter controllers.
